OnePlus 12: What to expect from OnePlus’ next flagship

Expectations for the OnePlus 12: OnePlus’ new top of the range

The launch of the OnePlus 12 has already taken place in China and details are beginning to circulate about what this new high-end cell phone has to offer. Its international launch is scheduled for the beginning of 2024, but there is still little concrete information, especially about prices and whether the specifications available in China will be the same as those offered in other markets.

Design and appearance

In terms of design, the OnePlus 12 maintains a similar aesthetic to last year’s model. The most notable modification externally is the change of side of the Alert Slider from the right side to the left side of the device. Furthermore, in the white and green versions, the circular disc in the camera area now has a translucent appearance, leaving behind the shiny metallic finish, while the black version maintains the shine of the previous model.

Chamber renovations

When it comes to photography, the OnePlus 12 introduces slight changes to its cameras, such as an increase in the resolution of the telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, now offering 64 megapixels compared to the 32 megapixels of the OnePlus 11. However, it maintains a 50-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.

Investigating internal improvements

The most significant improvements to the OnePlus 12 are internal. The unit will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which represents a performance step up over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and paves the way for generative AI applications on the device. The specific generative AI features that could be incorporated into the new phone were not detailed.
OnePlus has made a quantum leap in minimum storage, now starting at 256GB and a base RAM of 12GB, surpassing the 128GB storage and 8GB RAM of the previous model. Additionally, maximums of up to 1TB of storage and 24GB of RAM have been reached, significantly exceeding what was offered by the previous model and what competing phones currently have, although it is uncertain whether these maximum configurations will be available globally.

Battery capacity and charging

The battery capacity has been increased to 5,400 mAh on the OnePlus 12, compared to 5,000 mAh on its predecessor. Charging speeds have also been optimized, with 100W for wired charging (80W on the American version of the OnePlus 11) and 50W for wireless charging. It is worth mentioning that it will probably be necessary to purchase a branded charger, as most third-party wireless chargers do not exceed 25W.
In short, with the OnePlus 12, the company is setting new expectations in terms of hardware specifications. Despite this, it remains to be seen whether these advances are reflected in superior performance when the device is thoroughly tested and compared.
