The OnePlus 12 could be one of the best Android phones of 2024

The OnePlus 12 promises to be a jewel among Android devices in 2024.

OnePlus’ smartphone range stood out considerably this year, with the OnePlus 11 marking a significant turning point in terms of quality/price ratio. For an affordable price of $699, it offers a vibrant, spacious display, high-quality cameras, exceptional performance with efficient software, and an all-day battery.

However, there were certain aspects that needed improvements, which seem to have materialized in the OnePlus 12 recently presented in China. Based on the performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, the expectation is that the new generation present in the OnePlus 12 will be among the best Android phones of 2024.

An impressive camera setup

After using the OnePlus 11 as my main phone, I was impressed with its performance and design. Although the OnePlus 12 does not significantly innovate in appearance, its hardware receives a notable update, incorporating two essential features: one very sought after by me and another very appealing to the US market.
The OnePlus 11, despite having three cameras, did not have a 3x optical zoom, a feature that the OnePlus 12 added thanks to a new triple camera setup. This setup is based on a 50MP Sony LYT-808 main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), accompanied by a 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide-angle camera and a 64MP OV64B periscope lens with 3x optical zoom.
This configuration is identical to that of the OnePlus Open, known for the most versatile camera system on a foldable cell phone. The modules have received continuous improvements through updates, and now, with the “4th generation Hasselblad Camera for Mobile” configuration, the OnePlus 12’s camera quality is expected to surpass that of its predecessor.

The return of wireless charging

A notable shortcoming in both the OnePlus 11 and the OnePlus Open was the lack of wireless charging. Although it is not a disadvantage for me, I understand that, for many users, this feature results in greater comfort and convenience. The OnePlus 12 features 50-watt wireless charging, reminiscent of the OnePlus 10 Pro, one of the fastest wireless charging phones in the US at the time. The OnePlus 12 is likely to take that position soon and it will be interesting to see how it adapts to the North American market.
The addition of better cameras and wireless charging makes the OnePlus 12 a more complete device. Although this could mean a price increase, the device aims to be one of the stars of 2024, in line with the company’s recent track record and experience with the OnePlus Open camera system.

Other features of the OnePlus 12

In terms of design, the OnePlus 12 introduces subtle changes, such as the location of the alert button and the new wavy pattern on the green variant.

OnePlus 12 pricing and availability

In China, the OnePlus 12 starts at 4,299 yuan ($607) for the base 12GB/256GB variant, with the higher-end 24GB/1TB option costing 5,799 yuan ($818). Prices are expected to increase when the device launches globally in early 2024, with the possibility of reaching other markets in late January.
When evaluating prices in China, we can anticipate that the OnePlus 12 will be a price-competitive option when it hits the US market. With all these features and expectations, the OnePlus 12 is all set to be one of the most prominent Android devices of 2024.
