The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, made a public call in the context of World Peace Day 2024, under the theme “Peace and Artificial Intelligence”. The statement, recently revealed, includes a series of considerations, listed in eight main topics.

Intelligence, as a gift granted by the Creator to humanity, implies the possibility of, through knowledge and freedom, reciprocating divine love, the Pope pointed out.

In his investigation, the Pope emphasizes the contributions of scientific and technological progress to the organization of social life, freedom and fraternity, translating into development for society and positive transformations in the world.

Perspectives and challenges brought by advanced science

Francisco congratulates the achievements made possible by science and technology, at the same time as he highlights the dangers inherent to these advances, such as the risks to human survival and the planet. He highlights the need to consider the long-term impacts of new technologies.

The Pontiff also addressed algorithmic and data collection systems that have the capacity to influence behavior for marketing or political purposes, raising relevant ethical questions.

Optimism about using AI for good

According to Francisco, artificial intelligence tries to simulate the cognitive capabilities of human beings and its impact largely depends on the way it is developed and the intentions of its creators and users.

The Pope warns that the beneficial contribution of artificial intelligence is conditioned on our ability to respect fundamental values and act responsibly, thus moving closer to peaceful and altruistic objectives.

It further emphasizes the primacy of human dignity and fraternity as foundations for the development and evaluation of emerging technologies.

Demarcating limits for technology

Awareness of human limits was highlighted as essential by the Pope to receive the fullness of life as a gift, highlighting the risks associated with the absence of these limits.

Technological innovation far from militarization

The Catholic leader expressed special concern about the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies in the arms sector, stressing that the world does not need innovations that stimulate the arms trade.

Science at the service of education and inclusive growth

The Pope argues that artificial intelligence should focus on promoting comprehensive human development, substantial improvements in agriculture, education and culture, increasing the quality of life, human fraternity and social inclusion.

The need for international regulation

Finally, Francis called for a joint effort to establish an international treaty that regulates the development and use of AI, considering the perspectives of all interested parties, including those commonly excluded from decision-making dialogues.

In conjunction with this call for responsible regulation, the Pope actually conveys a predominant message: the creation of a peaceful and fraternal future through AI focused on justice and harmonious progress. The search for conscious technological development thus becomes an extension of the call for human unity and solidarity.
